111. Spalentor, Basle (BS)

This red sandstone gate was constructed during the 14th century. In its origin it ­belonged to the exterior belt of fortification surrounding Basel. Thanks to this gate, Basel and Alsace could communicate with each ­other and this contributed to improve the commercial exchanges between Switzerland and France.
