103. Castle of Montebello, Bellinzona (TI)

Montebello castle, known also under the name of Schwyz castle, was built in the 14th century. This castle played a key role in the network of fortifications that guarded and controlled the traffic of goods between northern Italy and the Gotthard, Lukmanier and San Bernardino passes in the Middle Ages. The Bellinzona Fortress, consisting of three castles, an imposing wall and the town wall, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.
